February 10 - March 10, 2021
9:30 - 11:00 AM PDT
Pratt Fine Arts Center ONLINE
Open up new design possibilities by learning to work reductively on a small scale appropriate for jewelry. This class will prioritize working with simple, widely-available tools (jeweler’s saw, x-acto, etc) and materials that don’t have grain (note that we will not work with wood). We’ll begin by working with wax (carving sculptural forms rather than technical settings) but demos will also cover materials such as plastic, tagua, and epoxy, and topics such as working symmetrically, attaching findings and carving models for use in moldmaking. Students will receive direction and guidance but will also have the freedom to explore their own ideas with the instructor’s support. Prerequisite: none.
*Students will pick up a supply kit from Pratt prior to the first class. Students will need to provide their own handtools based on a shopping list provided (this includes common jewelry tools such as a saw, files, etc). Students receiving Tuition Assistance may request to borrow a tool kit from Pratt. Please register at least one week prior to the class start date to have time for getting tools and supply kits.
